despite my disgust at the state of spitalfields, i still had lunch there - doh! however, canteen is a great little outfit that has just two other branches in london and as such must be the least corporate of the outfits gracing the now rather generic market. good british food with lots of literature on philosophy and sourcing techniques which appear to laude the national farming and fishing industries. expect firm family favourites such as roasts, sausages, pies, fish and chips, soups, stew and bakes. This is also a GREAT place to pick up breakfast - with a traditional concoction on the menu alongside more continental additions such as eggs benedict, museli and fruit and porridge. on this visit i went for the bacon and spinach salad with poached egg, plus buttered toast on the side. excellent choice, bacon tasted rather like crispy pancetta, whilst the egg was perfectly presented in plump, pillow format. the toast was perhaps sour dough and delicious. in my opinion - canteen is the only beneficial addition to the area during the development of spitalfields.
seen orbital and goldfrapp at somerset and both are in my top ten london nights of all time. out door clubbing in the captial, surrounded by the stately refines of art, culture and heritage architecture, can't get much better than that.
i went to my first big chill in 2000. it was at larmer tree gardens, there were only 4,000 people and it was truly brilliant. the victorian pleasure gardens are home to little mazes, peacocks and ancient pieces of architecture, whilst the camping field looked out over corn fields. the art trail was this amazing, magical thing that you stumbled across, tv's hanging in trees, projecting lovers kissing in a near-by field, illuminated webs criss-crossing a walk way. i've been to quite a few BC's since and they have certainly paved the way for chill out events - but as the events get larger and larger and the company is sold to a corporate buyer, the essence that made BC so unique in the first place gets left behind in the rush for profit.
i went to my first glastonbury festi in '92. was the first year it was televised and also the year that someone got shot!! had a wicked time, bjork was my music highlight and donuts my food of choice.
lovely little local hide away on west side of bethnal green tube. dj's at weekends are on hand for some jovality, good bottled beers to tickle your fancy and on most nights a tasty crowd to get involved with.

I'm thinking of writing a piece about celebrity eateries which are quickly becoming very fashionable in Brighton. we have everything from Jamies Pukka pasta to Fatboy's Okinami as well as Carluccio in the Laines, and Zilli's designer restaurant...Now to top it all Zoe ball is opening a cafe bar on the beach! also a trendy new place called recipease, Jamie again, has just opened on the high street.
All very bizarre.. so i'm going to look into them and see what the craze is all about.

oh yeh, I saw that another contributor was interested in the Speech Debelle review and thought that she had already been chosen for it? So, it's okay, could you let the other contributor do the review and I'll wait for a next one?
