Most pubs and bars have artwork, which at best can be so-so. But the fact that Xuma used to be an art gallery means that the standard has to be pretty high. Set in plush, atmospheric environment in the Seven Dials area, they have a great selection of entertainment, quizzes, DJ nights, open mic night and even midnight poetry readings. Can be quite pricey but has a great basement for parties.
Unassuming from the outside, Riki Tik is like the TARDIS – looks small from the outside, but huge on the inside. Very laid back, Riki Tik has a day-time following for those who want that swift pick me up. The evening entertainment consists of choons being spun by the city’s leading DJs. This is a good place for cocktails and shooters if you are in the Laines. If you fancy a nibble, then freshly prepared food is also available, and the price is alright too. If you don’t fancy going to a club to the wee hours of the morning, then this place is a great alternative. Be warned, tables are like gold dust.
If you’re up Kemptown way, then visit Gin Gin. The cocktails are crafted to perfection and it’s a great place to unwind with a couple of mates. There is a vast menu to choose from, but ask the staff for their recommendations. Or test their knowledge and get them to make one up for you. They are very friendly and know their stuff.
Very difficult to miss due to the fact that it’s bright turquoise, the Fishbowl is a great place to hang out. Large groups won’t be able to get in, which is probably a good thing. It’s quite small. Lots of fishy paraphernalia adorn the pub, including sculptures to muse about. Upstairs has a bit more room (and sofas!) and here you can see the fishbowl that the pub was named after. Great for a chat and a pint.
A friendly, traditional pub that received excellent reviews from both the Good Pub Guide 2007 and the Good Beer Guide 2007. A good mix of people come here with both local and students convening to sample the 90 something whiskeys, wines and other alcoholic beverages. The decor is interesting too, with tobacco and cigar tins adorning the walls. Some even have messages in which makes for an interesting read.
